Technical Meeting/Social: Tuesday December 10th
December is too chaotic for hosting both a technical meeting and a social, so we'll do something geeky. K-LUG and PCIG will go hang out at Hobby Goblins for board and card games. Bring yours if you have some to share, last time they also had a few of the personal games of the staff available to introduce us to.
We'll list an official start time of 6 pm since that's the time of our normal technical meeting, but last time we were welcome to show up early if you want. And while they officially close at 8 if the store is unpopulated, last time we were playing nice so we were allowed to stay until after 9.
We're allowed to bring (or order in) food, and beverages. We'll take up a monetary collection towards pizza, and order at ~6:15, don't be late if you want in on the food. They aren't charging us for the use of this space, but they have soda (canned, Pepsi and Coke products) available there for sale as well as chocolate candy bars (ie Snickers and Twix); it would be nice if we "paid" for our use of the space by purchasing our beverages from them. If you bring your own beverage, please do so in resealable containers. Treat contributions are welcome, please be considerate of food that won't damage the games (directly or by making for very messy hands).
But note you've actually got to turn north on East River Road NE before making an immediate left into their parking lot (they share lots with Little Bob's Auto Body Center).

AATiny remote project, Dennis has provided the following description.
"Many of you know the Ardunio as an easy to use hardware and software development system for the ATmega328 microcontroller. For many projects the Ardunio board may be too expensive to dedicate to a project. There are smaller, cheaper ATmega328 boards that can be used if not all the options of the full Arduino board are needed.
But what if that is still too expensive for a very simple project? The Ardunio system can be used to develop code and program smaller Atmel chips like the ATtiny84A and ATtiny85 chips. The ATtiny84A has 14 pins, the ATtiny85 has 8 pins. The chips have a subset of the features of the ATmega328, for example only 8K of flash and 512 bytes of ram. They are less than $2 in small quantity and include an internal oscillator, so minimal external parts are required.

To use the the Arduino environment some addition files need to be downloaded and added to the sketchbook to describe the chips to the compiler and loader. Then the code can be written and the chip programed with just a few extra mouse clicks.
I will show how to set up the environment for the ATtiny84A and ATtiny85. After that we will go through a project to use the ATtiny85 to decode an IR remote control and control a couple of output pins."

Creative Reuse build day at the Rabbit Hole.
They're going to undertake several re-use activities. Planned are:
-Junk bots creation
-Construction of a secret door for the server room, with a bookcase and a fire alarm door pull
-Kalidescopes using some glass and mirrors
Then they're going to make a stop action video contest submission, this may happen after the 26th due to time constraints.

If you want to play at the Rabbit Hole on Friday night October 25th too, you can take a pumpkin (one you bought at Northwoods Orchard?) for soldering pumpkin lights and pumpkin carving night. Bring your own pumpkin and knife. Need to learn to solder? This will be a good night for that, bring your own kit or talk to the Toymakers in advance about other potential options (candle flicker simulator). I'm assuming this one is 6 pm. They typically order cheap pizza and pop, bring your $5 to pitch in if you want to partake.

The Rabbit Hole is a maker space in Rochester, Mn. A random set of folks partially made of up PCIG and K-Lug members with an eclectic set of interests including Electronics, Music, Software, Microcontrollers, Hacking, Making, Gadgets, Photography, Solar, Android, Robots, Climbing, Canoeing, Biking...the list goes on and on... We're less than a year into the maker space world, but have already held many group events from Learn to Solder, to a Learn Lumi Picnic This presentation will discuss what is a Maker/Hacker space, the Maker revolution, Maker Faires, and highlight some of the Rabbit Hole creations and events including the Recyclotron, Wall-o-Tron and the arrival of our new Carve Wright CNC machine.

Unfortunately this is a weather dependent activity and even if the rain has cleared off, if there's too much mud it won't be a lot of fun.
I'll assess the rain, and if necessary call the farm after they open at 10 am to assess the mud level in the maze. If there's a cancellation, I'll send it out by email by noon (preferably by 11 am, toddler permitting) on Saturday.
We had to cancel due to muddy conditions. 1 pm game afternoon at Tina's, for anyone interested.

There are enough 2L bottles already for the water bottle rockets. Bring your own rocket+engines for working with our Launchmaster Kevin Arhelger. We have enough Lumi to make 4 red and 16 orange "prints", you need to do homework (prepare a negative/stencil) and bring a light colored shirt and a dark colored bag. Bring a potluck dish to pass, a serving utensil, and your own beverage; Tina will provide the plates, forks, and napkins.

oVirt, the first truly open and comprehensive data center virtualization management initiative, provides a venue for user and developer cooperation. The heart of the project is the open source code of oVirt, and the community is governed openly, modeled after the Apache Foundation, Eclipse, LVM, and many other well functioning Linux communities.
oVirt manages virtual machines, storage and virtualized networks. oVirt is a virtualization platform with an easy-to-use web interface. oVirt is powered by the Open Source you know - KVM on Linux.
This presentation will demonstrate setting up an oVirt environment and give you a taste of some of the features available.

These Instructables must include a link back to Jameco’s website. (Not posting these Instructables may affect K-LUG/PCIG chances to participate in future build nights).
3. Brownie Points (not required): after the build night post a forum topic on Instructables about your event. Include pictures, stories, etc... Here are two examples from the May build night Instructables ran (we didn't participate): Noisebridge and Makers Local 256. They may even feature our photo on their homepage.

Kevin A will present on DEF CON.
DEF CON is one of the oldest continuous running hacker conventions around, and also one of the largest. Kevin has attended several times and just got back from this year, he's eager to share his experiences. At his presentation, he will talk about the conference, and computer security in general. This year was especially interesting because the NSA, CIA, FBI, and AirForce, all major supporters of DEF CON, have been banned. Questions will be welcome, come prepared.

Sugru build night and Instructables writing. Instructables.com sent us several mini packs of Sugru Sugru self-setting rubber. Our challenge is to play with, create something and write up 4 sets of instructions, Instructables, about the things we did.
Your pre-preparation homework: Brainstorm something more unique than smartphone bumpers and handle (bike, garden tools, etc etc) grips. If you have some Playdough bring it along and we can experiment before using the somewhat pricey real Sugru. Here are some ideas other people had and have already done/written up.

We're stealing RochesterFest ideas, and finally going to see Cascade Meadows environmental learning center in NW Rochester. There's a 10-2 event about pollinators (bees, butterflies, etc).

As of 5/13, there were still no disc golf holes out at RCTC, and I'm not thrilled about bringing toddlers to East Park for several reasons. So we're going to go to Stewartville, and play disc golf at Bear Cave Park. We typically have a few spare discs to share among those attending, but if you plan on attending and need to borrow it's best if you can give us a heads up. Otherwise you can throw your own non-golf disc, a ball, or a shoe.

K-Lug and the Red Bull Creation 2013 Contest
Recently several K-Lug and PCIG members entered a Maker Contest called Red Bull Creation 2013. We were given an Arduino Shield (called the TurBULL Encabulator and 5 Meters of RGB LED light strips and 1 Meter of addressable RGB LED light strips. We bought 4 more addressable light strips and went to work...creating an invention of Peter Shabinos ...a touch sensitive Rock Climbing Wall called the WALL-O-TRON. The following schedule is tentative, because the official movie schedule is released on Wednesday or Thursday in a week for that weekend. That's not a lot of notice for planning a group event. Details:
Lunch at Kingdom Buffet, followed by a movie. Feature movie is The Hobbit (2D), but there are several others starting in that same general timeframe if you'd rather attend something else. Alternatively, you can do just lunch or just the movie. We'll meet for lunch at 1 pm, 1639 N Broadway. The Hobbit is at 3:20 at Cinemagic (2171 Superior Drive N.W., by the old Westfire). If Chinese isn't your favorite, please don't be intimidated; Kingdom Buffet does have several buffet items that are more Midwestern acceptable (bbq ribs, teriyaki chicken shishkabobs, salad bar with jello, pudding, hard boiled eggs and fruit, ice cream, etc), it's our preferred spot to feed our toddler when we're out and need to put food in front of her immediately but don't want fast food.

(unfortunately this is a much shorter list than it had been last weekend, we lost ~1/2 the options)
Both Mayo and Think Bank have discounted movie ticket rates, but I think those are only valid on non-matinee priced movies.

Because of the rescheduling and the field trip, we'll put off officer elections until February.
