We generally meet monthly for technical presentations (2nd Thursday of the month, 6 pm, RCTC), and monthly for socializing (varies). We no longer meet monthly for lunches, if you are interested in reviving this tradition please [http://k-lug.org/About contact an officer].

Did you used to be on our email list and suddenly haven't gotten email for months? We had a glitch and it caused many people to get unsubscribed; unfortunately Tina doesn't have a way of knowing who all we lost. Please use "Linux mailing list" on the left to get yourself re-added, sorry!
Robert Nix, on how to put together an iOS application in Xcode in Swift.

--

Swift has been a trending topic, and now that it has been open-sourced, the language becomes more relevant for platforms outside of Apple. Join us as we look at Swift 3 and XCode 8, and how to put together an iOS app from start to running on the iPhone.

Robert has been programming in one language or another since 1973, and has gained experience and insight over the years that has allowed him to adopt and adapt to new languages in a quickly changing industry. Swift is the latest in what has been a 43 year educational trek.

=== "January" Social: Fridays February 12th, 19th, plus others ===
We're going to try a map-based (eg armchair) road rally, http://home.earthlink.net/~oldmaltese/Massacre.html . Due to there having been a start-up cost for this event, I will be asking for contributions (say $5-10/family?) for those who come participate. Anyone bringing an additional "11x15 100-page-plus 2016 Rand McNally Road Atlas" (this same large scale copy MSRP $20, Amazon has for $15) will have their fee waived for their assistance uncrowding the map table.

I anticipate this being much better done by small groups, and it seems a bit lengthy. So we are going to host two pre-specified nights of map reading, and if Friday nights don't work well for you then email me off-list to request your available T/W/Sat/Sun timeframe and we'll see if we can work something out. Fees per family won't be re-collected at subsequent attendances.

6:30 pm at Tina's house (email for directions). Snack/beverage potluck only (come with dinner already in your belly).

Postmark deadline for submission of this for scoring is Monday February 29th, which realistically means we're going to have to mail it on Saturday the 27th, so our last potential night is Friday February 26th.

__NOTOC__
= When do you meet? =

Technical meetings are once a month, during the second week of the month. As of August 2008 we are no longer on a rotating Tuesday/Thursday schedule, we're trying consistent second Thursdays. Meetings start at 6:00 PM. We often share space and speakers with [http://www.pcig.info/ PCIG].
Check the [http://www.k-lug.org/Main_Page Main] or [http://www.k-lug.org/SocialMeeting Social] pages for additional social meeting announcements.

We also meet for lunch on the 3rd Thursday of the month at the Apache Mall food court at 11:30 AM, sort of near the Barnes&Noble. Look for the geeks. For those coming from IBM, there are some people who carpool. For those coming from downtown, you can take the bus (route 7A, departing downtown at 11:12 am) or it's a 30 minute walk (plan to depart the SE corner of the courtyard between the Harwick and Medical Sciences building at 11 am) in decent weather.

= Where do you meet? =
= What do I need? =

An interest in Linux...that's it. We've got everyone from newbies to experts here so don't feel bad if you don't know a thing about Linux...that's what we're here for. To actually play with Linux you'll need at least a pentium (technically a 386 would work, but nobody has those kind of patience :), preferrably with a CD-ROM drive. We've got CDs and burners if you'd like your own copy too.

Including specifically alerts and monitoring of who is logged in remotely. Are others logged into your system? Have others logged in as you? Have you been rooted? What did any of these people do? How can you help protect yourself?

-Klug photo album - Do we want one? Who would be willing to put it together? Could we put it on a wiki page that's only accessible to a restricted list, such as those already signed up to the mailing list? Are we photogenic enough to be willing to have our mugs posted?

-virtual meetings - 1. Would anyone on our mailing list take advantage of meetings if they were virtual i.e. webcasts or whatever?
At least with Audio and Slides available.
2. Regardless of the answer to 1, it would be a cool meeting topic if someone could demo Asterisk, an opensource PBX system, with Voip capability...perhaps way more function than we need for "virtual meetings", but it could be used to allow all k-lug users to listen in on our meetings...then we could combine that with a tool like VNCserver to show slides and on-screen demos. This is a Linux friendly solution that may allow more people to participate in our meetings. What do people think? Perhaps there are better or simpler solutions to this problem?.
-Construct a set of slides and presentation material to conduct a Community Ed class, with the goal of making it easy for the presenter so that the "duty" of holding the class could be circulated among the K-Lug'ers willing to do it. If you had to do it once a year instead of four times, it might be easier to keep a class like that going. Live Knoppix CDs are an issue at the Community Education building, the PCs there would not boot from CD, so you'd need a floppy disk boot manager to get the CDs in play. The goal, especially for the Linux class, is to allow everyone to walk away at the end of the evening with a live-CD in hand.
Technical meetings are once a month, during the second week of the month. On even numbered months we meet on Tuesday and on odd numbered months, Thursdays. For clarification, we start counting with 1 like the regular calendar, not 0. That means Tuesday meetings are February, April, June, August, October, and December, although we will move them to coincide with the Thursday PCIG meetings if we're sharing a speaker that month. Meetings start at 6:00 PM.
== Building Flickr Applications with PHP ==

Flickr is one of several new generation Web applications which have taken hold of the public's interest. Thousands of people now share their images with the world through their Flickr accounts.

The book "Building Flickr Applications with PHP", written by Rob Kunkle and Andrew Morton, introduces yet another way to use Flickr to present your photos. Aside from all the ways Flickr has provided on their site to share your pictures, they've also built an extensive API, accessible via PHP on your own web site.

"Building Flickr Apps" introduces this API, beginning with how to install the necessary tools, how to get the phlickr library, and how to get application keys from Flickr. It then walks through examples of the various API elements, from very simple tasks to some fairly complex examples of what can be done. It covers working with single photos and with your photo sets, how to use tags within the API, how to create an RSS photo feed, and how to use the API to interact with Flicker groups.

Each chapter of the book begins with simple, small examples and builds to a useful and robust web Page or useful task, giving you the basis to begin building your own application. Add a random photo from your Flickr stream to your own web page, or show your last six photos the way you want to show them. Get information about your photos, bring up tagged images, or create your own RSS feed for your friends and family. The beginnings are all here.

If you want to expand your use of Flickr to your own web site, this book is a good starting point. While there are instructions for getting and installing all the software needed (for both Windows and Linux) it is not an introduction to Apache or PHP. It does do a very good job of covering the link between Flickr and PHP, and the Potential there. If you're interested in photography and the web, give it a try.

Technical meetings are once a month, during the second week of the month. On even numbered months we meet on Tuesday and on odd numbered months, Thursdays. Meetings start at 6:00 PM. Check the main page for additional social meeting announcements. We also meet for lunch on the 3rd Thursday of the month at the Galleria Mall food court at 11:30 AM, next to the Chinese restaurant. Look for the geeks.
