We need volunteers for creating advertising, putting up signs, running the recycling station, and of course everyone should bring their stuff to sell/swap. <br>
Our December social occurred last year at Pwned (now closed), in the
past it's been held at Area51 or it's been a LAN party (need host).
Other options could include a night of non-computer games at a house
(again need host, and btw if this type of thing interests you don't
forget to check out the Activities email list and calendar, links on the
wiki), X-box type games at a local movie theater, playing laser tag at
the House of Bounce, or whatever else you suggest. Let Tim or I know
what you'd like.

=== Upcoming Meeting Crisis! ===
Well, not really a crisis, but we do need some meeting topics (& speakers) for 2009. We'd like to know what you want to see and hear about. Please email Tina or Tim with suggestions for topics. Should we run some previous sessions again (maybe something you really wanted to see but missed out on)? What type of topics are good, what type are bad? Also don't forget, Speakers earn up to $40 as an incentive for their presentation! Also see this page for a list of suggested topics http://www.k-lug.org/Meetings

__NOTOC__
= When do you meet? =

Technical meetings are once a month, during the second week of the month. On even numbered months we meet on Tuesday and on odd numbered months, Thursdays. For clarification, we start counting with 1 like the regular calendar, not 0. That means Tuesday meetings are February, April, June, August, October, and December, although we will move them to coincide with the Thursday PCIG meetings if we're sharing a speaker that month. Meetings start at 6:00 PM.

Check the main page for additional social meeting announcements.

We also meet for lunch on the 3rd Thursday of the month at the Apache Mall food court at 11:30 AM, sort of near the Barnes&Noble. Look for the geeks. For those coming from IBM, there are some people who carpool. For those coming from downtown, you can take the bus (route 7A, departing downtown at 11:12 am) or it's a 30 minute walk (plan to depart the SE corner of the courtyard between the Harwick and Medical Sciences building at 11 am) in decent weather.

= Where do you meet? =

At the University Center Rochester Heinz Center in room HA107. [http://www.roch.edu/html-spectrum/getting_to_ucr.html Need directions?]. [http://www.rctc.edu/campustour/maps/heintzA.html This map] may help you find the specific room.

= What do I need? =

An interest in Linux...that's it. We've got everyone from newbies to experts here so don't feel bad if you don't know a thing about Linux...that's what we're here for. To actually play with Linux you'll need at least a pentium (technically a 386 would work, but nobody has those kind of patience :), preferrably with a CD-ROM drive. We've got CDs and burners if you'd like your own copy too.

= How do I get started? =

Just attend one of our meetings or jump on the [http://lists.k-lug.org/mailman/listinfo/klug mailing list].
= Requested topics list =
Can't think of something you want to present, and looking for ideas? Look no further. Got a topic you wish someone else would present on? Post it here.

-Open source applications in Education - anyone have experience with any applications such as Moodle, Sakai, LTSP? What others are there?

-samba

-copying your own DVD's to your own computer for personal use

-wireless access - Are others using your wireless connection, what have they done? How can you help protect yourself?

-remote access - Security for a machine you intend to leave online as a remote accessed server for yourself as well as family/friends. Including specifically alerts and monitoring of who is logged in remotely. Are others logged into your system? Have others logged in as you? Have you been rooted? What did any of these people do? How can you help protect yourself?

-Klug photo album - Do we want one? Who would be willing to put it together? Could we put it on a wiki page that's only accessible to a restricted list, such as those already signed up to the mailing list? Are we photogenic enough to be willing to have our mugs posted?

-virtual meetings - 1. Would anyone on our mailing list take advantage of meetings if they were virtual i.e. webcasts or whatever?
At least with Audio and Slides available.
2. Regardless of the answer to 1, it would be a cool meeting topic if someone could demo Asterisk, an opensource PBX system, with Voip capability...perhaps way more function than we need for "virtual meetings", but it could be used to allow all k-lug users to listen in on our meetings...then we could combine that with a tool like VNCserver to show slides and on-screen demos. This is a Linux friendly solution that may allow more people to participate in our meetings. What do people think? Perhaps there are better or simpler solutions to this problem?.

-VMWare player and server are now free, we could demo this to allow windows users to dabble in the linux world more easily

-Xen or KVM, I keep hearing about them but haven't used or seen em...why would I pick something over VMWare?

-Linux on a USB Key, how can I easily configure the contents I want on the key, including wireless without having to create a dual boot environment on my Pc.

-Apache for personal use (photo albums, maybe a wiki, music, etc)

-PlutoHome

-Thinclients and connecting them to a main home server

-Construct a set of slides and presentation material to conduct a Community Ed class, with the goal of making it easy for the presenter so that the "duty" of holding the class could be circulated among the K-Lug'ers willing to do it. If you had to do it once a year instead of four times, it might be easier to keep a class like that going. Live Knoppix CDs are an issue at the Community Education building, the PCs there would not boot from CD, so you'd need a floppy disk boot manager to get the CDs in play. The goal, especially for the Linux class, is to allow everyone to walk away at the end of the evening with a live-CD in hand.
Volunteers for teaching once presentation is written: Steve Schaper

-Voting and vote tracking

-Now that new cars don't come with cassette players, it becomes necessary to put those books on tape or music on tape on a more useful format for travelling. How to do this using cheap/free/already owned software and hardware. Could expand the topic to rescuing your any favorite out-dated audio material (record, 8-track, etc).

-aapml application mark up...what is it/how is it used. Is it going anywhere.

-Repairing/rebuilding a hacked machine

-Some workgroup like sessions to configure, build and install USB
Drive distributions. Maybe several evenings in a row so one missed
could be attended or used for catch up.

-More Home Automation related stuff if anyone has information to
share.

-A clean way to make copies of purchased DVD movies for viewing off
a laptop hard drive.

-Home Document Management (OpenDocMan project) scanning, indexing and
managing important documents.

-Introduction to Onion Routing, building and using Tor for fun and profit!

-Using the ports system under (Free|Open|Net)BSD

-LDAP Authentication and user management

=== Planned Technical Meeting: Thursday December 13th ===
Linux games LAN party? Gaming night at Lounge51? Weigh in with your thoughts.

Gaming night at Lounge51 (formerly Xgames) with PCIG, unless someone else wants to research other options. Research I did last year on other options can be found at the [http://www.k-lug.org/index.php?title=OldNews&action=submit#Technical_Meeting:__Tuesday_December_12th Old News] page. Lounge51 details that were current as of December 2006:

Location: Lounge51, 115 North Broadway, this is next door to the Senior Center and just south of the railroad tracks. This is NOT the old Xgames location. If you're not sure about finding parking, there's free parking after 5 pm just around the corner in the Center Street ramp.

When: Thursday December 13th, 6 pm. However they open at 10 am, so you're welcome to start earlier. Also, while Lounge51's posted closing time is 9 pm, if three or more people want to keep playing and they're paying hourly rates, Lounge51 will stay open later.

Cost: $5/hour if a non-member. Other options are memberships or day passes. Snacking options: Pop, sugar, snack foods, basically anything that doesn't actually require a food license for them to sell.

Games available (and # of simultaneous players allowed): They have 24 computers. See [http://lounge51.com/content/Games.aspx here] for an old list of games. Many more are now available. As far as licensing, that varies. Some games are available on every computer at once, and for those it's not available all at once it sounds like things are at least improved over Xgames' limitations. Examples I was given on the phone were:

-Age of Empires (version not specified), all machines

-Battlefield 2 - 10

-Counter Strike 1.6 - 6

-Counter Strike Source - 12

-Warcraft III - all machines

If there is a particular game you want to know about, I can call to ask. If there's a lot of interest in a particular game they don't currently have enough licenses for AND you are willing to pre-pay, they'd look into getting additional licenses for us. Besides computer games, they also have a big screen tv, with an Xbox, PS2, PS3, Gamecube, DDR pad, Guitar Hero, and lots of games to go with them.

=== Planned Lunch: Thursday December 21st ===
11:30 am, at the Apache Mall food court sort of near Barnes&Noble.

=== Planned Social: December, TBD ===
Does anyone want to do anything else in the month of December? Input requested.

=== Planned Technical Meeting: Tuesday January 8th ===
Presenter needed. See our [http://www.k-lug.org/Meetings list of requests] if you need some ideas.

'''KLUG officer elections'''
Please submit your nominations for president, vice president, and treasurer to the email list prior to the day of the election. Self nominations are accepted.

=== Planned Social: January 2008, TBD ===
What would you like to do? Some ideas can be found [http://www.k-lug.org/SocialMeeting#Suggestions_for_future_socials here], or feel free to be original.

=== Planned Lunch: Thursday January 18th ===
11:30 am, at the Apache Mall food court sort of near Barnes&Noble.

=== Future Social: TBD ===

=== Planned Lunch: Thursday November 15th ===
11:30 am, at the Apache Mall food court sort of near Barnes&Noble.

=== Planned Technical Meeting: Thursday December 13th ===

=== Planned Lunch: Thursday December 21st ===

=== Planned Social: January 2008, TBD ===
What would you like to do? Some ideas can be found [http://www.k-lug.org/SocialMeeting#Suggestions_for_future_socials here], or feel free to be original.

=== Planned Lunch: Thursday January 18th ===
11:30 am, at the Apache Mall food court sort of near Barnes&Noble.

=== Future Social: TBD ===
Paintball at Skyline Raceway. Exact date and time will be announced when known. More details on the [http://www.k-lug.org/SocialMeeting Social page], or pester Paul Kessler.
'''Hacking MythTV'''

Authors J. Wilson and Ed Tittel

When I first heard the title of the book "Hacking MythTV" I had a picture in my head of of a book that uncovered the hidden secrets of MythTV, something that would be useful after going through all the install and setup. Not so, the time to get this book is as soon as you have made the decision to build a MythTV media center. You could build a system from information gathered off the web, you'll find excellent user forums and guides for installing MythTV on Gentoo, Fedora and Ubuntu. You will also find fairly good support in the SuSE and Debian communities or could just install KnoppMyth and really save some time. There are others available but I am only mentioning the ones that I have experience with. Let me explain how "Hacking MythTV" differs from these methods.

In nearly all cases what I have found with the guides on the web is that they are setup like an assembly manual that comes with a kids new toy; follow step 1, 2, 3... and have lots of fun when done. But what if something goes wrong and you have no idea why you were doing 1, 2 or 3, other than that's what you were told to do. That is where this book sets itself apart from the other methods that I have worked with, you will find a lot of useful information included with the steps that will allow you to make some decisions specific to your own hardware or needs. Also if you do run into problems you may find it easier to resolve since you now have a better understanding of how each step of the install/setup process works.

Hacking MythTV will begin by describing what MythTV is all about and how it differs from alternatives; DVRs, PVRs, HTPCs and so on. You'll find some excellent tips on selecting hardware, not only Linux friendly hardware but also components that won't be a nuisance (sight or sound) in your family room. You will pick an install method, after being offered some options. Then on with the install and setup, again with very thorough details of frontends, backends, plugins... And then on to what I was expecting to find; some advanced tips and hacks. And if you do run into some problems you will find there is a troubleshooting section at the end of the book.

In my opinion if you have MythTV you need this book.
