Presentation summary: Node.js is a server side javascript platform currently very popular for easily building fast, scalable web applications. This presentation will be an introduction to node and will demo how you can set up a free (for 1 yr) hosting environment on Amazon's cloud based hosting service called EC2.

Small scale computing is becoming more affordable as technology
advances. For low cost simple 8 (or occasionally 16) bit micocontrollers
were the norm. This trend lead to the Arduino microcontroller on a
board. The low cost and popular support have made it a very popular system.

A few years ago the Raspberry Pi project was started to bring the cost
of a full computer on a board into the Arduino price range. This was
followed by the Beaglebone Black, a lower cost version of the Beaglebone
family. These new systems, which have price points under $50, are
significantly different than the Arduino level systems. They have
similar I/O capabilities but much more computational power than the
Arduino. They are also more complex to use effectively.

In this presentation I will briefly compare the differences and than
discuss some Beaglebone Black features. Unlike the Arduino, development
can be done directly on the Beaglebone as a stand alone system. I will
also talk about VNC which allows a PC to remotely control the Beaglebone
GUI.

As a part of [http://www.rochestermn.gov/departments/park/activities/winter/WinterFest/days/2_saturday.asp Rochester's WinterFest], there's free admission and a free snow globe making session at the Art Center (which is on the south side of the Civic Center downtown).

Meet at 12:30 at the Rochester Art Center. Saturday February 1st.

The admission to exhibits is open and free from 10-5. The snow globe making activity runs from 1-4. So those who want to participate in snow globes will have a half an hour to browse the exhibits before showing up for the first round of instructions at 1 pm, in the 3rd floor studios. Anyone wanting to avoid snow globes can continue to browse the exhibits. I'm having a hard time with the exhibit schedule on the [http://rochesterartcenter.org/exhibitions/exhibitions.html art center's website], as it looks like most of the current exhibits ended recently and they haven't updated their website with what's new. So if what they're exhibiting matters to you, keep an eye on their website or give them a call, and let the rest of us know what you find out.

Always felt too awkward to go to a Children's Museum without a kid of your own in tow, or your kids were "too old" to want to be used that way? Come hang out with the group, and feel better that at least some of us are bringing kids. Do be aware that the MCM-Rochester's policy on adults attending without kids is that you will be required to show photo ID.

Kyle Jervis will talk to us about bitcoin, including a lot of time for Q&A.

Bitcoin is decentralized peer to peer money. There will be a
brief overview of the system in the context of previous electronic money
systems and show how bitcoin solves the problems encountered by them.
There will also be a technical introduction to the inner workings of the
system (cryptography, network, transactions, scripts, etc.) The
remainder of the session will be Q&A/discussion. Questions on virtually
any bitcoin-related topic are welcome.

We bought 4 more addressable light strips and went to work...creating an invention of Peter Shabinos ...a touch sensitive Rock Climbing Wall called the WALL-O-TRON. How it works:

1. Have the Build Night: At the event build projects using parts from the Jameco electronics kit.

2. Post 3 Instructables: post 3 Instructables using the electronics from the kit. You are not limited to just these components, but projects must include parts from the kit. In April 2013, several K-Luger's were accepted for the Red Bull Creation 2013 maker challenge

Tim, Pete, Matt, Will, Jon G, Jon T have been hacking away for several days on their top secret "Let There Be Light" project...The project was submitted in just in time and our entry is here:

Our project is an Interactive Rock Wall Climbing machine powered by a Linux PC an Arduino UNO and a "TurBULL Encabulator". The Wall-O-Tron features an 18x16 climbing grid with 288 touch sensitive holds, and 324 embedded route LEDs and 36 Cardlets. The Marquee features hot-wire crafted foam letters lit by 5 meters of RGB LED light strips and a scrolling scoreboard display created from 5 digitally addressable, 300 RGB LED strips. (We got the TurBull Encabulator (an Arduino shield) and 6 meters of LEDs from Red Bull...we purchased another 4 digitally addressable LEDs from Adafruit)

The Arduino controls the Wall o Tron sign lights. Since there are eight different channels on the Encabulator, we can have 8 different colors going and so the letters are on channels in order and start over again starting with the R (ie so W and R are on the same channel and A and L are on the same channel)
The Arduino also puts letters and numbers on the LED Scrolling light board ...an interesting programing challenge since the LEDs are from 0-59 and then the 2nd row is 69-119 etc
But we can put letters and numbers out in any position on the board with or without clearing and in any color and with or without scrolling animation.
The Arduino and the Sensors both go over Serial communication, so there are 2 usb to serial connections from the pc. PC code is written in Perl and Arduino.

The game we coded is called Wall Sweeper. There are LEDs around each rock (most have 4 around them except for left and right edge rocks). A Goal rock lights up by flashing green LEDs around the rock. The climber traverses to the Goal Rock and it turns off and a new Goal rock appears. A red Hot Rock may also appear and never go away...so the Climber has to be more and more careful with each traverse. Score is based on the number of traverses the climber can do. A timer may be added in the future. Many additional games have been proposed. Record Playback of routes, HORSE type of game for 2 or more players, Jailbreak where a beam of red rocks sweeps back and forth, there will be versions of the games for younger and less experienced climbers where only the lower level lights are used and one last game suggested is Frogger!

During the weekend of February 22nd from 7pm Friday till 7pm Sunday, several K-LUG members participated in [http://thedeconstruction.org The Deconstruction 2013], a 48 hour Maker/Hacker challenge...from their website:

"The Deconstruction is about re-thinking the world as we know it, taking it apart, making a few adjustments, then putting it back together a little awesomer-er. It’s a light-hearted competition/ game, but it’s really more of a large-scale collaboration between friends, teams, and the public. The concept is to make the world a slightly better, more fun, and more interesting place over 48 hours. The event is open to anyone, anywhere, of any age and skill level."

Our team created three projects
* a Japanese Style Tea Lantern, a lovely wood and paper solar lantern made from the remnants of 3 corroded and broken garden lights.
* a PVC Bike Trailer, Using some left over PVC and 2 donated bike wheels, we made a bike trailer for one of our members who is visually impaired.
* the Recyclotron Can Crusher - recently a garbage hauler stopped hauling recycling and so one of our members needed a solution to make it easier to recycle his own aluminum. An old garage door opener was donated, we decided to use an Arduino and the garage door sensors to count each can crushed...and made a robot dance and lights flash every time a 12 pack was crushed.

Celebrating Irish Heritage through potato guns, plus construction (outside) of a messy Rube Goldberg device. Dress warm.

1 pm at Tina's house, directions via email. We need people to bring potatoes for the potato cannon, and a target. For the Rube Goldberg device, we need people to bring ideas of what useless/useful thing we want it to accomplish, plus all sorts of interesting things to incorporate into it. Snack food contributions and lanterns would also be good.

* Sledding (but where? (judd hill and eastwood park are official sites in roch for sledding, stewartville has a sledding hill))
